"White House", north portico
The Mall picture - The White House (1792), the official home and principal workplace of the President of the United States, is the oldest public structure in Washington. The late Georgian style house, built of white-painted Aquia sandstone, was originally designed by James Hoban. Benjamin Henry Latrobe later developed the rebuilding plans after the House was set on fire in 1814 during the War of 1812. Thats when it was painted white for the first time. [Hobans design was largely modeled on the first and second floors of Leinster House, a ducal palace in Dublin, Ireland, which is now the seat of the Irish Parliament.]
