The Mall picture - Although the idea and plans for the White House began in George Washingtons time, it was not lived in by any president until John Adams. Construction began in 1792. The footings were dug by slaves, & the foundations were also built with slave labor. Much of the other work on the house was performed by immigrants, many not yet citizens. The initial construction took place over a period of eight years. Although not yet completed, the White House was ready for occupancy on or about November 1, 1800.
