located across from the White House, is part of the Smithsonian Institution, and houses a permanent collection of contemporary American crafts, and presents temporary exhibitions of decorative arts and crafts from all periods. Previously, it was the original home of the Corcoran Gallery, which displayed the private collection of William Wilson Corcoran's art beginning in 1859. By the 1870s the collection had outgrown the building and Corcoran had a new museum built.
