the Columbus Monument. Constructed of Georgia marble, it consists of a semi-circular fountain 66 feet broad and 44 feet deep. In the center is a large pylon, crowned with a globe, supported by four eagles connected by garland. The 15 foot statue of Columbus, facing the U. S. Capitol and wrapped in a medieval mantle, stands in front of the pylon in the bow of a ship, with its prow extending into the upper basin of the fountain, terminating with a winged figurehead representing democracy. Flanking Columbus are two seated, allegorical figures. The patriarchal figure with a map (on the right) representing the Old World. The pre-Columbian figure (on the left), crouching behind his crude shield reaching for an arrow, represents the New World. On the rear of the pylon is a double medallion showing Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The three towering flagpoles behind the monument represent the three ships of 1492.
