Guatemala

We left Guatemala this morning and are now in sunny Honduras, and a short stroll from the famous Mayan ruins at Copan. Since our last group email many weeks ago we went to Tikal. Of all the ruined temples and cities we have seen so far this was by far our favourite. Tall, thick jungle as far as the eye could see with pyramids poking through the canopy. Monkeys, huge butterflies and colourful birds were all very much of the experience. Again, my photos don't this site anything close to justice.

Safety on local buses
We preferred to take the local buses as we found the experience to be very interesting. If you don't mind your bags being thrown on top of the bus with the chickens and local produce and you want to get an insight into how the locals travel - do it. Obviously when you are in the bus you need to do the normal things with belongings, have your documents and money in a money belt inside your clothing, keep your day bag on your lap or at your feet etc. Apart from the extremely cheap price, there's usually music playing and many different indigenous groups travelling on the same route. It's definitely an experience in itself so if you're up to it you should give it a go!
