Intramuros, the Walled City of Manila, covers approximately 160 acres on the shore of the Pasig River. Construction began in 1571 with walls six meters high and seven fortified gates as the only access points. A moat was added in 1603. Through history, Intramuros has withstood attacks by various armies and by pirates. The Japanese used it during World War II as their garrison and prison. After the war, the US administration filled in the moat to prevent disease.
