A "Rauchhaus" (Smoke House) is a particular kind of farmhouse. In such a building the wood stoves' chimneys did not vent to the outside, but ended once they got as far as the attic. The point of this construction oddity was that it allowed any meat or fish hung in the attic to be preserved by being smoked. Visiting this building, I discovered a slight, of noticeable smell of smoke pervading the building. As the next picture will show me as a child, in front of the "Rauchhaus" in which we lived.
