seen behind my brothers and me, had been our home. I am the tallest of the children. I am not sure whether our problems were peculiar to this building only, or whether they were a general problem. Usually, as it was supposed to do, the smoke slowly escaped from the attic through the spaces between the wooden shingles which covered the roof. In our place, however, there were problems. If it rained or snowed, this route of escape was cut off and the smoke backed up, and invaded our living quarters. It was not a pleasant experience!
