Wigan Pier
Contrary to common belief, there realy is such a place, as anybody who reads George Orwell will tell you! Being inland Wigan never had a pier in the conventional sense, so Orwell used the name as something of a parody, symbolising "Nowhere" or "The End of the Line" - that being the theme of his book "The Road to Wigan Pier".
