In connection with the outer wall, Jayavaraman VII build the "Victory Gate" leading out of the town south (he also built the gates of Angkor Thom). The modern town is within the area of the wall, unlike the temples in Angkor, in whose temple complexes the jungle has taken over the formerly inhabited areas between the outermost walls and the temple enclosure proper.
