The temple, i.e. the sanctuary, lies on the top of this hill and is approached by a long, straight ascent along stairs and causeways. They lead through a series of four gopuras of increasing elevation (plus a fifth, last one that leads to the inner sanctuary). A few steps behind the temple, the hill drops with a breathtaking sweep, and the Cambodian plain spreads out below your feet (visible in the background, left). When I started out, all of this was in a thick fog.
