St Petersburg
Sightseeing in Russia picture - The light cruiser Aurora. Soviet mythology preserved this 1900 built light cruiser. The story has it that the October Revolution started when the Aurora fired a blank shell from her fore turret. In fact the shot came from the Peter and Paul fortress across the Neva River. The Aurora herself has had her own share of adventure. In 1905 she was part of the Russian Baltic Fleet that sailed all the way around the world to relive the Japanese naval blockade of Vladivostok. The entire Russian fleet was annihilated at the subsequent battle of Tsushima. The Aurora was one of five ships to escape.
