Death Valley National Park -- three and a half million acres of wilderness, solitude and primitive adventure -- lies on the eastern edge of Southern California, not far from the Nevada state line. I spent a winter week journeying through the park and its outlying areas. I travelled from the lowest point in the contiguous United States to within sight of its highest point. Death Valley is a land of climatic extremes, ghost towns, bleak desolation and glorious vistas.
