The Pilgrimage Church of WIES stands amid the forests, peatbogs and meadows that charaterize the last slopes of the Alps. It was in 1746 that Dominikus Zimmermann, a brilliant architect, was given the task of designing a pilgrimage church "in der Wies" (in the meadows). This was to be dedicated to Christ Scourged. The work was completed in 1754. This church was intered in the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1984.
