After 45 years of dependence of the caliphate of Damasque, the Omeyan king Abd-al-Rahman I declared the independence of the kingdom of Al-Andalus, and constituted the independent Emirate of Córdoba. A few years later, in the year 785, he begun the construction of the great mosque of Córdoba.
