BOBBILI. Andhra Pradesh. India

Bobbili Kingdom was established in the 17th Century by Pedda Rayudu.It was later defeated by Vizianagaram King with the help of the French. The most popular king was Thandra Paparayudu who was also ref. as 'Bobbili Puli' meaning The Tiger of Bobbili, however the name Bobbili originally was 'Pedda Puli' in Telugu, the local language as 'the great Tiger' (ref to History of Bobbili) which over the period of time became Bobbili. The history of BOBBILI(and its Velama's) is as old as Telugu bravery. Military exploits of Velamas form bobbili is an important part of Telugu people’s tradition, history and folklore. The battle of Bobbili speak volumes about their good nature,martial spirit, chivalry and fearless nature.

Velamas (Padmanayaka, koppula velema,adi velama, Polinati velama etc) and all the people of bobbili irrespective their caste and creed are responsible for the greatness of Bobbili and its popularity and culture. If we read the story, each and every caste people of Bobbili area were involved in this famous Bobbili battle.

On the whole a great place ,It’s a great example of Telugu people fighting and winning against internal enemies like vizayanagaram rajas and their colonial French supporters like Bussy and his army. It’s a story of loyalty, courage ,sacrifice and win against colonial rulers and their supporters.

Exciting to come across your photographs. I was born in Bobbili in 1931, essentially lived there until 1948 except for time spent at boarding school in Ootacamund. The palace reasonably familiar to me. In the mid 1940's I tried to convince Gopal the Kum Raj to start up a cricket team for Bobbili. Could not find enough players. All the best.

First of all thanks for your interest in Bobbili.I am basically from Veera-Bobbili(This is official name by Govt.) and presently living in Dubai.

It’s a nice place with great history. I completely agree with you when you say if given attention Bobbili can take its rightful place in the Indian History.I always felt apart from using the Bobbili name for movies(by the way All the 5-6 movies are big hits!) and as a symbol of courage, even the AP government has done nothing to help Bobbili develop. Bobbili battle incident is a symbol of honour, loyalty, deception and above all ferociousness and it happened in the recent times ,Government can popularise the Bobbili story by including it in the school text books.

I really appreciate your efforts and thanks again for this post.

Khan, good work by putting the pictures on the net. Bobbili is a very beautiful place. I lived there for couple of years. I quite enjoyed the Sapotas, Mangoes and Sugar canes.
