'Sati Sthambs' (handprints)
Sightseeing in Rajasthan picture - 'Sati Sthambs' are a gory reminder of the old practice of 'sati' (a widows self-immolation on her husbands funeral pyre), a practice that was prevalent among the Rajputs who preferred death before dishonour. These symbolic hands are imprinted on a vertical slab ('Sthamb') to commemorate the wives of Rajput soldiers lost in battles, who committed sati. Handprints can be found next to Karan Pol & next to Daulat Pol (gate), the next gate. The practice of sati was mercifully abolished during Maharaja Sardar Singhs reign between 1851 and 1872.
