The jarring, jolting ride from Kathmandu to Dhunche, the start of our Gosaikunda (frozen lake) trek, took nine hours despite being less than 100 km. Some of those hours were spent taking in the scenery from the top of the bus, a more pleasant and sunny way to travel than wedged into my seat inside the hot, crowded bus. I'm about 5'6" and there's usually not enough leg room for me! I feel sorry for those Westerners who are taller than me.
