While riding on the elephant's back (all five of us squashed into one little simple wooden version of a howdah), we were able to get quite close to a group of rhinos at a watering hole. Much closer than I'd ever want to get to these unpredictable animals while on foot. Our elephant driver assured us that we were perfectly safe while on the elephant, though.
