is the oldest & main part of the palace. Built in 1571 by Maharana Udai Singh on the very spot where Udai met the holy man who told him to found his city here, the courtyard is part of the Mardana Mahal (the mens' royal palace). This is where the Maharana sat and administered justice. Although the palace may look rugged from the exterior, the interior has many enclosures with luxurious apartments with delicate balconies & hanging gardens, as well as massive octagonal towers & cupolas that offer breathtaking views over the lake & the city from the upper terraces. There are several 'Mahals' (palaces) in this annex that are now preserved as a museum. Estabished in 1890, the museum is one of the earliest museums in the state. In addition to beautiful mosaics & glass & mirror work, the museum displays a vast & diverse array of artifacts ranging from miniature paintings to coins, sculptures, inscriptions, portraits, & wall paintings.
