Our final destination in Bolivia was the amazing and surreal salt flats, el Salar in Spanish. We took the local bus from Potosí to Uyuni. Potosí was quite cold at night but pretty nice and warn in the afternoon…what a surprise when we got to Uyuni. It was very cold and dark, something close to zero degrees Celsius with wind. There was almost a frontier feel to the town. We went to a French restaurant for a nice meal. I had Llama steak – a good blend and French and Bolivian cuisines. The town was dark and cold, in sharp contrast to other Bolivian cities like La Paz and Sucre where it was warm even during the winter month of June. Another surprise we got was no heating in the hotel room. The hotel was nice and clean, except it was quite cold. We woke up very early in the morning (around 4:00 am) and met our driver and our cook – Franc and Concepción. Concepción was a good cook and we ate well in the journey. She got fresh produce from local markets and whipped up items like Sopa de Quinoa, Pique a lo macho in pretty basic kitchens. Franc was very good as well and did a good job taking us from scenic spots to scenic spots before dropping us off at the Chilean border. He was so enthusiastic about the whole area. The accommodation was very basic but very memorable. We stayed at the salt hotel where our hotel was mainly made up of salt blocks! It was very cold and there was no heat in the bedrooms. Power was available for only three hours at night. The second hotel was a regular building, ie not a salt hotel but the facility was even more basic – there was no running water and you needed to use the bucket to flush the toilets. Somehow, we had great fun in this environment and the local people were so friendly and courteous. It is a humbling experience for me just to see them survive gracefully and stay strong in this environment. In terms of the scenery, it was totally surreal and beautiful. The Salt flats were so blindingly white against the strong sun and Bolivian blue sky while the temperature was low, like minus 10 to plus 10 degrees Celsius. Afterwards, we were treated for scenic sights with snow capped mountains or mountains with different colours, lakes with emerald, blue or even rose colours, birds , hot springs etc. Definitely an adventure I will not forget anytime. After three days, we went off to Chile and said goodbye to Bolivia.
