You can see that it's not far from Penang (93 kms), nor is it far to the Thailand border (45 kms). It's also handy to Langkawi Island, in fact, the ferry to the island leaves from Kuala Kedah, only 25k from the city. (There are other reasons to visit Kuala Kedah which I will mention later.)
