Sightseeing in Kedah picture - The design of the intricately carved Balai Besar, which displays strong Thai architectural influences, has the appearance of a Malay house with a lengthy Minangkabau roof. In front are two large staircases, & on either side of the throne are verandahs - the one on the right side was mainly used by court children, the one on the left by religious men, merchants & worthy citizens. The pillars and cross-beams were made of the high quality cengal wood from Kedah, & the roofs were made of rumbia (a type of palm-tree).
