Balai Besar - Grand Audience Hall (bb) Sightseeing in Kedah picture - (balai = hall, besar = big) is part of the Kota Setar Palace complex. This building initially functioned as the audience hall where the Sultan gave audience to his subjects & administered justice. This original building, which was built in 1735, was badly damaged in the attacks by the Bugis of Selangor in 1770 & the Siamese in 1821. It was rehabilitated in 1896 in preparation for the grand wedding ceremony of the five royal princes & princesses in 1904. From 1905 to 1973, the building was used for weddings, official functions and state council meetings.
