I can't remember any other place we've ever visited that surprised us as much as Petra. We had just a day in Jordan on a cruise, and signed up for the tour without knowing anything about this marvelous site. After walking half a mile through a very narrow canyon, we couldn't believe what we saw at the end of the hike. It was this building, the Treasury, carved right into the mountain many centuries ago.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was filmed here, but that was a few years after our visit. The movie of course put Petra on the map for millions of future travelers.
