Britain's collection of giant stones is mysteriously arranged in a circle. The first time we were there, we could walk around and even touch the stones. Now a large fence keeps visitors at a distance, and I didn't even bother taking a picture. So I borrowed this from a travel book. To tell you the truth,it's just as well: none of us had this kind of a view, even before the fence! Five thousand years after Stonehenge was constructed, historians are still arguing about its purpose: was it a temple dedicated to the worship of ancient gods, or an astronomical observatory, or a sacred burial site? Take your pick. This photo and that of Easter Island from the 'Great Book on World Heritage Sites'.
