Cuba, 90 kms south of Florida, is like travelling to some sort of socialist 'jurassic' park. Although the country has many charms (sea, sun, pristine beaches, beautiful colonial architecture), the country is also the living and decaying testimony to a faltering political system. While most former communist countries have nowadays abandoned a system that doesn't work for the people but against the best interests of the people, Cuba (or better the ageing Cuban leadership) is continuing full steam ahead with a repressive system that cannot deliver any of the goods a modern vibrant society needs. Today, after 50 years of communist rule, the country is worse off than in 1959, the year of its 'revolucion'. Cuba's development effectively stopped in 1959 and has since visibly regressed: empty shelves, decaying infrastructure and housing, potholed roads, 'medieval' means of transport, nowhere any sight of modern 'investments', ... After 50 years in power, the results achieved by the Cuban leadership are shameful (they try to pinpoint their failure towards the US embargo but that 'fact' can hardly account for the misery created). Cubans deserve better in 2007. A must see destination for everybody who wants to see to what 'setting the wrong priorities' can lead to and for everybody who is in need of better appreciating the fact they live in a 'properly functioning' country.
