The first Christian church was built on this site by Danish King Harald Bluetooth who may have been buried nearby in 986. A succession of churches led to this cathedral, the first gothic cathedral to be made of brick. A succession of Danish royalty, at least 38 monarchs, have been buried here. With the Reformation, church and government powers left Roskilde for Copenhagen. Today it is a parish church.
