During my 2006 Scandinavia trip, I stayed in Copenhagen for several days. While there I took a day trip up to Helsingor, a.k.a. Elsinore, a small town with a famous castle and interesting history. The castle, Kronborg Slot, was the setting William Shakespeare chose for Hamlet, although Shakespeare probably never actually visited the castle. The castle and grounds are open to tourists.

The town is just across the Oresund - the Sound - from Sweden at the entrance into the Baltic Sea. So Helsingor became the place that collected the Sound Dues, fees collected from passing ships. The Krogen Fortress was built to enforce the Sound Dues. A couple fires and reconstructions later, Krogen Fortress had been transformed into Kronborg Slot.
