The Flamingo Las Vegas has quite a colorful history since it opened on December 26th, 1946 with just 105 rooms. It was located seven miles south of Downtown Las Vegas and was named after the girlfriend of gangster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. The hotel cost over $6 million and was reputed to be the most luxurious in the world, with modern conveniences such as air conditioning and a swimming pool. Today, the 3,626 room hotel/casino has sprung up around the original hotel, which has since been torn down and made into a garden.
