At the time when it opened on December 5th, 1973 the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (as it was called), was the largest hotel in the world with 2,084 rooms. On November 21st, 1980, the largest disaster in Nevada history took place, when a fire raged through the hotel/casino, killing 87 guests and employees. Because of this tragedy, the fire safety codes in Nevada are among the strictest in the United States. The MGM Grand was sold to Bally's in 1985.
