The piece of rail left intact is the broad gauge of seven feet and a quarter inch designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The line was changed from broad gauge to the standard gauge of four feet, eight and a half inches in 1875. In February 2006 a commemorative plaque was unveiled which can be seen attached to the buffer board at the far end of the platform. It reads " Pete Knight (inset) 1935 - 2004 A staunch supporter of this community and railway enthusiast who was much involved with this site.
