View of the Vitré's old district
Normandy picture - Vitré is placed on a rocky elevation on the river Vilaine, and was a deffensive strong point of the dukedom of Brittany against the kings of France. The castle was built in Romanesque style in the XI century by Robert I of Vitré, and was enlarged in the XV century by Guy XII of Laval. The Parlament of Brittany refuged in this castle several times during the XV century.
