The Bristol and Exeter Railway reached Highbridge in 1841 and the station was opened in 1842. At its height Highbridge Station had six platforms. There was also a locomotive and carriage works which closed in 1930. The decline of the railway network due to the Beeching Axe in the 1960s hit Highbridge Station hard and today there only remains two un-staffed platforms. The two branch lines were closed in the 1960s, one to Burnham on Sea and the other to Evercreech Junction and the official name of the station is now Highbridge and Burnham.
