The Carnarvon area was first settled in 1876 and the town named after Lord Carnarvon, then British Secretary of State for the Colonies.

One Mile Jetty was built as the pastoral industry developed in the Carnarvon area. in the late 1800's the local population pressured the government of the day to develop a port and by 1897 the jetty had been built and wool and livestock produced in the region began to be exported to Fremantle and essential good imported into the town.
