Chincoteague and Assateague Islands in Virginia are located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore near the bottom of the Delmarva Penninsula. Chincoteague is the island community where people live, while Assateauge is a National Seashore. The big draw to Assateague, of course, are the wild Ponies. The legend is that they were survivors from a shipwreck of a Spanish Galleon bound for the New World, although many historians doubt this is actually true.
