Portimão [pop. ± 35,000], is located on the western side of a small harbour at the entrance to the Arade River, about 25 miles (45 km) to the west of Albufeira. Thus it is an ideal base from which to explore the many other historic sites which will be featured in future articles. It is often considered in conjunction with the tiny village of Ferragudo, located on the opposite (eastern) side of the harbour-mouth.
