Fall Foliage at Oil City State Park, located in Oil City, Pennsylvania. Oil City is north of Pittsburgh and a little south of Erie. My wife & I spent several hours hiking around the park, which is located in Venango County, on October 21, 2007, admiring the impressive foliage as the trees turned yellow, red, and orange. Oil City was the place where on August 28, 1859, Colonel Edwin Drake struck oil and established the first commercially successful oil well. The oil industry exploded in the 1860’s and 1870’s while Oil City became a Wild West style boomtown. Companies like Pennzoil and Quaker State had their headquarters there until the 1990’s … The park is located a little north and east of Franklin, Pennsylvania. Just off Route 8, the park contains 52 miles worth of hiking trails, where you can watch the leaves change color. My wife & I hiked from the Petroleum Centre to Pioneer Run. The promised waterfall was a big bust as there is no water cascading down it, though I am sure it is much better in the spring. My wife & I then turned south and hiked down Pioneer Run to Oil Creek. Crossing the creek, we got onto the bike trail and hiked back to the Petroleum Centre. It must have been a hike of 5-6 miles or so up and over hills. The foliage was impressive to behold.
