In 1885 Miss Frances Jane Ward left a sum of money to set up the Library for the benefit of the people of Bruton. The Library is in memory of her father George Ward and her uncle, John Ward. In 1996 the trustees renewed the lease to Somerset County Council for another 21 years and the rent is still as it was at just £1 per year.
