During my 2007 Utah road trip, I used a rainy day in Page, AZ, for a drive across the Navajo Nation to Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Monument lands wrap around the upper rim of the canyon - the canyon floor is protected Navajo lands and at most places requires proper permission/guide. Several scenic overlooks along the rim provide great views into the canyon, including views of the ruins of several Ancestral Puebloan sites.
