… of the Moors’ castle-fortress at the highest point in Tavira, which offers a commanding view of the countryside. It now shelters a nice public garden. I climbed up the stairs that you see in the picture, and found them really steep, and surprisingly far apart, considering that mediaeval men were shorter than us. It must have been pretty dicey wearing and carrying armour.
