The Johnson City Bank building
Sightseeing in Hill Country picture - This limestone building, now the Johnson City Bank, was under construction in 1885 when its builder, James Polk Johnson died at age 40. When completed, it served as Johnson Citys first courthouse with a jail in the basement. The first church congregation (Methodist) met in an upstairs room of this building until their church building was constructed, and Lyndon B. Johnsons local offices were later located here. The building has also been a hotel, hardware store, retirement center, & dance hall. Sadly, it has been extensively modified by the bank & does not qualify for a heritage building designation.
