During my 2007 Germany trip, I spent three nights in Nurnberg. One of my stops was at the Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelande, the Documentation Center/Nazi Party Rally Grounds. The Nazis held several party rallies in Nurnberg in the years before the war, as Hitler attempted to connect his party with Germany's historic traditions at Nurnberg.

Hitler and his architects planned a number of massive buildings, parade grounds and other monuments at a spot on the southeast side of Nurnberg. Many of the buildings were started, but only the Zeppelintribune was completed before WWII put building efforts on hold.

Today, the Dokumentationszentrum, located in Hitler's Kongresshalle, provides powerful displays on the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, World War II, the atrocities that the Nazis committed against the Jews and other groups, and the post-war Nurnberg trials. The grounds of the Reichsparteitagsgelande preserve the buildings and other features that survived the war and post-war era.
