In the post-war era, the Bavarian city of Dachau is associated with the concentration camp that the Nazis established there. But Dachau is actually an old city. The earliest known reference dates back to 805AD.

Beginning in the 12th century, Dachau became the site of the summer home of a number of Bavarian princes. In the mid-1500s, the Wittelsbach royal family built Dachau Palace on a hilltop above the Amper River. It was updated in the 1700s, but today only one wing of the once four-wing palace remains.
