Beginning in the 12th century, Dachau became the site of the summer home of a number of Bavarian princes. In the mid-1500s, the Wittelsbach royal family built Dachau Palace on a hilltop above the Amper River. It was updated in the 1700s, but today only one wing of the once four-wing palace remains.
