Beginning in the 12th century, Dachau became the site of the summer home of a number of Bavarian princes. In the mid-1500s, the Wittelsbach royal family built Dachau Palace on a hilltop above the Amper River. It was updated in the 1700s, but today only one wing of the once four-wing palace remains.
During my 2007 Germany trip, I spent a day in Dachau. For part of that day I explored the city itself, focusing on its hilltop palace and surrounding old city. My visit to the concentration camp is covered in a separate entry, Germany 07-KZ Dachau.
