The new cremation facility had four ovens (three shown here). One author I read preferred the term "incinerate" over "cremate", arguing that in a traditional cremation the process culminates in the collection of an individual's cremains, usually for presentation to the family. At KZ Dachau and other Nazi camps, the goal was the fast, efficient and economical disposal of human bodies. Prisoners executed by hanging were hanged here in front of the ovens, making it easier to dispose of their bodies.
