Its engine room had flooded, and the stricken ship was turning perilously over on its side when we finally left that morning. Sometime during the night, the Explorer sank to the bottom of the sea, some 1500 feet below. And with it went a lot of memories and a lot of love from the people who had sailed on her during the past four decades.
