Discoverers' monument
Sightseeing in Lisbon picture - When Portugal emerged from its centuries of stagnation and decline, its past glories began to be celebrated again. This 50 m (about 160 ft) monument on the north shore of the Tagus near the Belem Tower represents a stylized caravel and sail, with statues of famous Portuguese explorers and others. It was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It has an observation deck on the top, reached via an elevator.
