This is a huge square located just to the east of the Belém Tower. This fountain in its centre is decorated with shields commemorating the various possessions that Portugal claimed within its Empire. Today, of course, there is no longer any “empire”, although Portuguese language and culture are still very much alive around the world. Depending on which survey you consult, Portuguese is still the third or fourth most widely spoken European language.
