Palacio de Pena
Sightseeing in Portugal picture - (Photo courtesy of Corel Galleries). For more information, see the text. This (to my mind, anyway) bizarre 1839 behemoth was built over the ruins of a Hieronymite monastery, preserving its cloister and chapel. Originally intended as a hunting lodge, it just got larger and more eclectic, and became a part-time residence for the royal family. It was the last refuge of the Portuguese monarchy before they went into exile in England.
